The Clocktower building in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), built 1915 as part of a big cardboard company (Mr Gair actually invented corrugated cardboard, it seems); at the time of its construction, it was the largest concrete cast building in the US.
Now converted into upscale lofts.

Bryn Athyn is the site of Bryn Athyn Cathedral, the episcopal seat of the General Church of the New Jerusalem, an international Swedenborgian church. The cathedral is renowned for its stained glass collection and for its unusual architecture. It was built in the early 20th century, following the arts and crafts tradition.
It is also the site of the General Church affiliated Academy of the New Church, which publishes Swedenborgian literature, and is the parent organization of a high school, a four-year college (Bryn Athyn College of the New Church), a divinity school, and the Emanuel Swedenborg Library.

For some reason, this building has always looked to me like the headquarters of some evil organization. Maybe it's the dark colours, the three-part triangular structure or the logo with hands crushing, I mean cradling, the earth. In fact it is just the headquarters of a friendly neighbourhood credit union.

Blue Plate building

I've loved this building since the first time I saw it. It just has this crazy style to it, and the sign used to light up. Of course that drove Patrick crazy because A.) Blue Plate was synonymous with mayonnaise, B.) Patrick hates mayo, and C.) he lived like two blocks from here.

Still, I love it. I looked it up today and it was built in 1941 and is considered one of the city's earliest modernist buildings

Ever since the storm it stands empty, of course, like so many other buildings around here. But wait! Apparently it is being considered for renovation into a 72-unit mixed-income apartment building. I guess that's exactly what happened with the American Can Co. apartments in Mid-City, so maybe this will work.

Regardless I'm glad they're not tearing it down.

Also you can still buy Blue Plate mayonnaise and that's what's in my fridge (sorry, Patrick) and so I'm happy about that as well.

This administration building near the circle at SUNY Fredonia's entrance must not have all that much actual floor space, but it's a neat building set up on a little artificial hill. I can only imagine the tree in the middle of the semicircular building gets Christmas lights every December.

Manulife building in downtown Ottawa serves as a fantastic subject because of the outstanding glass and angles. I've often used it for backgrounds and it's cool all alone. Great building to look up if you're in the area.

"The Mitchell Building is Milwaukee's finest example of a high style, French Second Empire Style commercial building. A five-story rectangular edifice, the lower walls are faced with deep gray Minnesota granite and the upper walls with limestone. A mansard roof with dormers encloses the fifth story. A mansard roof tower rises above the center of the Michigan Street façade. The facades are elaborately decorated with carved stone window pediments, denticulated belt courses and sculptured figures. Eminent Milwaukee architect Edward Townsend Mix designed the building for entrepreneur and businessman, Alexander Mitchell. This building housed Mitchell's business enterprises including the Wisconsin Marine and Fire Insurance Company Bank; predecessor of today's Marine National Bank, the Northwestern National Insurance Company and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. Only traces of the original interiors remain, but the exterior has been little altered (NRHP-04/03/73)"

The Bank of New York Building (center), at 48 Wall Street, was erected by the Bank of New York and Trust Company in 1927-29 to the plans of Benjamin Wistar Morris. Established in 1784, the Bank of New York was the second bank in the nation and New York's oldest financial institution. In 1796, it became the first bank to erect a building on Wall Street. They stayed on the same plot of land through 1998 when they vacated the present building for 1 Wall Street.

Morris' 32-story Neo-Georgian skyscraper is clad in limestone and features multiple setbacks that double as open-air terraces as well as Colonial style elements, such as the flanking thatched-roofed setbacks and the top in the form of a small temple, crowned with a copper eagle at 156.5 m. The three-storey base is clad in rusticated limestone. The 29,700 m² of space within the building has been modernized and remodelled, whereas the original banking halls on the first and second floors have retained their historic styling. The first two floors are connected by an elliptical entrance lobby and all three have ample marble decor. The interior features murals made by J. Monroe Hewlett in 1929, depicting commercial and banking themes.

On the right, stands 40 Wall Street, originally known as the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building, or Manhattan Company Building, and later known Trump Building. On the left, stands 60 Wall Street.

The former Bank of New York & Trust Company Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1998. 40 Wall Street was designated in 1995.

Treasury Building (Department of the Treasury)

The present Treasury Building was built over a period of 33 years between 1836 and 1869. The east and center wings, designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument and the Patent Office Building, comprise the first part of the building constructed between 1836 to 1842. The most architecturally impressive feature of the Mills design is the east colonnade running the length of the building. Each of the 30 columns is 36 feet tall and is carved out of a single piece of granite. The interior design of the east and center wings is classically austere, in keeping with the Greek Revival style.

Later additions were made to the original wings, beginning with the construction of the south wing from 1855 to 1860 and the west wing from 1855- 1864. The preliminary design of the wings was provided by Thomas Ustick Walter, architect of the Capitol dome, but architects Ammi B. Young and Isaiah Rogers refined the plans, designed the interior details, and supervised construction. While the exterior of the building was executed along the lines of the original Mills wings, the interiors of the later wings reflect changes in both building technology and aesthetic tastes. Iron columns and beams reinforced the building's brick vaults; the architectural detailing became much more ornate, following mid-nineteenth century fashion. The final addition to the Treasury Building was the north wing, built from 1867 to 1869. Its architect was Alfred B. Mullett. Similar in construction and decor to the south and west wings, the north wing is unique as the site of the Cash Room -- a two-story marble hall in which the daily financial business of the U.S. Government was transacted. The room opened in 1869 as the site of President Grant's inaugural reception

The Treasury Building is the oldest departmental building in Washington and has had a great impact on the design of other governmental buildings. At the time of its completion, it was one of the largest office buildings in the world. It served as a barracks for soldiers during the Civil War and as the temporary White House for President Andrew Johnson following the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865. The Treasury Building is unquestionably a monument of continuing architectural and historical significance. In acknowledgment of the building's significance, Treasury was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972.

Guided tours of the building are available free of charge. The tour features restored spaces such as the 1864 Burglar-Proof Vault and the marble Cash Room. Also on the tour is the restored office of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury during the Civil War and the temporary office used by President Andrew Johnson following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, which has been restored to its 1860s appearance.

The American Standard Building, formerly known as the American Radiator Building stands at 103 meters tall just south of Bryant Park. The 23-floor Art-Deco tower was designed Raymond Hood and John Howells from 1923-1924 for the American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Company.

The design broke from the Beaux Arts/classicism styles of the time, utilizing bold cubic massing that allowed verticality in light of the zoning laws of 1916 dictating setbacks for buildings above a certain height. The tower rises up fifteen stories before it begins a series of setbacks, creating a striking silhouette.

The most striking feature of Hood's design is the unusual black and gold color scheme--which served both practical and symbolic purposes. Although Hood denied the later, the building is especially dramatic when floodlighted at night, like a giant glowing coal--in effect, becoming an advertisement for the American Radiator Company. The black brickwork facing, said to symbolize coal, was selected to lessen the visual contrast between the walls and windows, giving the tower an effect of solidity and massiveness. The Gothic-style pinnacles and the terra-cotta friezes on the edges of the setbacks are coated with gold, symbolizing fire and flame.

The base is clad in bronze plating and black granite. The large plate glass windows of the ground floor showrooms are enframed by slender, bronze, ribbed shafts reminiscent of the Gothic style, but terminating in cubistic pinnacles. The windows are surmounted by a slender continuous modillioned bronze enframement. The main entrance, between the windows, is set within an arched opening and accented by bronze details of modified Gothic design. The second floor is surmounted by a modillioned cornice set on large intricate corbel blocks, displaying a series of carved allegories by Rene Paul Chambellan, symbolizing the transformation of matter into energy. The third story has a distinctive window bay treatment, flanked by indented brick pilasters surmounted by gold pinnacles and shielded by intricately detailed railings.

In 1998, the building was sold in Philip Pilevsky for million. Three years afterwards, the American Radiator Building was converted into The Bryant Park Hotel with 130 rooms and a theater in basement.

The American Standard Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.

The American International Building (70 Pine Street, center), built in 1930-1932 for the Cities Service Company, was the tallest building in the Downtown area until the completion of the World Trade Center. It also was to be the last skyscraper to be built in Financial District in the pre-WW II years. It took until 1960 that another tall skyscraper rose to the area, in the form of the Chase Manhattan Bank. Today building is owned by AIG.

40 Wall Street (right), built in 1928-1930 for the Bank of the Manhattan Co., is best known for its race for the world's tallest building neck to neck with the Chrysler Building. Designed by H. Craig Servance, along with Yasuo Matsui and Shreve & Lamb, it was built simultaneously with the rivalling building. Both made design revisions as they were being built to add height, first with a raised spire in the Chrysler Building, countered by a heighened pyramid roof in the 40 Wall St. Finally, the 70-storey building was topped out with the raised pyramidal top and lantern, escalating the height to 927 feet, the builders being certain that they'd won. But when the Chrysler Building's secretly-raised needle-like vertex, raised three weeks earlier, was finally publicized, 40 Wall was left to hold the second place in skyscraper rankings. (Although according to the Real Estate Weekly, the 282.5 m tall building still holds the title of the "tallest mid-block building".) In 1946, 40 Wall Street was hit by a United States Coast Guard airplane in 1946 during fog. The crash killed five people, and the pyramidal tower was damaged. Though zoned for commercial use only, it has been said that Governor Thomas A. Dewey took residence below the observation deck for a time. In 1995, Donald Trump bought the building for million and renamed it the Trump Building. He intended to convert the upper half of it to residential space, leaving the bottom half as commercial space. However, today it remains 100% commercial space.

I don't think I have ever read a single account of this house that didn't go into how poorly it performs. still, it is a strangely attractive brain-shaped building.

This is the building site for the new marina development in Dubai. Apparently they are aiming to complete 20 100-storey apartment blocks as soon as possible. It is claimed that a quarter of the world's cranes are currently working in Dubai. I have never seen so much construction activity in the same place at the same time before. The scale of this operation is immense.
